Grandmouse Flausch

is a singer-songwriter and comedian who lived in Berlin since before the wall came down.

Living the alternative culture lifestyle ever since, she is an eyewitness to the astonishing transformation of Berlin from iron curtain centerfold to "Hip Capital Of The World."

Brandenburg Gate

Why did people climb on top of Brandenburg Gate on 9th November 1989, night when the Berlin Wall came down?

Perhaps because they knew it would make a pretty foto for the headlines ;-)

At the same time the gate has always been a symbol of political power, so climbing up on top of it also reads as:

"WE are the people and from now on we want to govern our lives ourselves."

Which is why Brandenburg Gate is known today as the symbol of democracy in a free and reunited Germany.

Before that however, the Gate has seen all kinds of masters, from feudal kings to Soviet soldiers, making it an excellent starting point for looking into the history of Berlin.

Hackescher Markt

lies at the heart of the so-called Barn Quarter (Scheunenviertel) which is where the

re-invention of East Berlin as a place of arts and alternative culture had its beginnings.

In between ;)

we will see the oldest street crossing, the oldest train station, and one of the oldest surviving residential neighbourhoods of Berlin.

On our journey we will learn how the collapse of socialist East Germany has created a unique tabula-rasa or if you want an empty canvas that gave artists from around the world space to experiment and bring about nowadays Berlin: the creative, tolerant and very dynamic Party Metropolis and alternative culture Utopia we all love
